This exquisite daito shows clearly the quality of fine hada from Gassan smiths. The hada is mokume, masame with some ayasugi mixed in small amounts. The hada is extremely well forged and is very tight. There are no flaws on this sword at all. The unbelievable activity in the this hada is rarely found on sword of this period. The sugu-ba is also well made with hada showing thru in places and hataraki can be found in many areas. Even though this hada is so active the overall felling of this sword is quiet and elegant. This sword was given an attribution to Gassan Sadaharu of the Sadayoshi Mon by the NTHK. My personal feelings on this sword is that it may very well be made by Gassan Sadakazu and the fact that it is not signed by him may have been a factor in attributing this sword to Sadaharu. I have polished a few swords from Sadakazu. This is why I feel this blade may have been made by him, Sadakazu swords are very popular for many reasons. There is a story behind this blade from the the previous owner that brought it back from the war. As in many stories evidence to substantiate facts is hard to prove when it is mostly from memory, but I feel that this information should be shared with the future owner of this sword. A WWII vet brought this sword home with him after the war. Apparently the military mounts were damaged from a bullet that struck this sword at the handle. The handle was knocked of the blade on impact and all that was left was the saya. Since that time the vet displayed the sword in a display case. When the owner of the sword purchased the sword from the Vet years back he had misplaced the saya and habaki. On the nakago by the Munemachi on this sword you can see a small area that appears to substantiate this story. I find this to be a very interesting aspect of this sword overall.
